“He highlights some of the many Black ballplayers and teams that played in Des Moines decades before Jackie Robinson integrated Major League Baseball. In doing so, he specifically identifies those Black ballplayers as professionals contributing to their legacy as players, enhancing our memory of them, and increasing our understanding of the roles that race played in the Midwest.”

Upcoming Book Signing Event

I'll be in small town baseball territory when I sign copies of my latest book, 'Pug,' 'Fireball' and Company: 116 Years of Professional Baseball in Des Moines, Iowa, at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 31, at the Rippey Public Library in Rippey, Iowa. Rippey is located a few miles north of Perry, Iowa, in central Iowa. The town of about 220 people has a decades-long baseball heritage. A high school baseball doubleheader will be played on an 85-year-old field in Rippey starting at noon. Come watch me throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the first game as well as get a copy of my latest book, which received a favorable review in the fall 2024 issue of The Annals of Iowa.
